I am in a multicultural high school where over 90% do not speak English at home. Reading is not a preferred activity and readers were almost an endangered species! I have always made contact with other schools so that our kids to see they are part of a valued world community of readers, but this is a bit different.

This is a Delany Book Club effort ( with a little nudge from me).
We knew not every school would have free access for students to join and post, so we are inviting the librarians to join, with full rights. The kids all have their handles which are listed, and they need to sign their posts, which are then posted by the library staff. We hope that this can be relaxed in the future, but my visits to schools in October revealed that there is a lot of limits on Internet access in both the UK and Pennsylvania.

It is a wetpaint education site, so has no advertising.

It is not time consuming - your group only have to suggest a few favourite authors (hopefully mostly local) and then read a book from an author suggested by another group and post a review.
The key is for each review and subsequent posting to contain some thoughtful questions so that it is easy for others who have read the book to respond.

OK... so it is formal, but it is
1. Our first wiki (drum roll... clap clap clap...
2. Mostly student driven - the history is currently up at http://delanylibrary.com and includes 2 podcasts.
3. It does not require students to read more than a book at a time and so may fit in with other reading programs that are running in the school

AND
It could do with more members!

Hi All!
You may like to check out how far we have got in developing an online school library with a web 2.0 focus.
We invite you to consider collaboration with our students.
We have 2 types of delicious account - one is for student links and is arranged in curriculum bundles. I hide links for tasks that have finished so the site is not too unwieldy. Th doorway to the other is through the 'Visual delicious' button. Click anywhere to gain access to my personal links. My delicious name is also 'awapuni'. Consider adding to my network if you are interested in my area of interest. Smile! I enjoy browsing my network links - its like an online magazine.
We have a union catalogue in this diocese and there is no freedom to adjust or add subject headings, so we are using LIBRARYTHING as a way to tag books using user-friendly tags. Not to say that all our tags are not in the catalogue,but we do not use them with the same precision. The Readers Group are taking over tagging in a few weeks. Some students have their own LT accounts, but all need to understand tagging before they get their LT licence.
We actually had a couple of hundred in LT, but we 'lost' them and I mistakenly thought it was a student act. Not so - LT can be unstable. If this happens, contact LT immediately and they can rescue them for you.

UPDATE: In the time I have been away, the group has been tagging. The 50 tags we display now include various anomolies. However... in a library 2.0 environment, do I value correctness over involvement? I can see a really interesting Book Club discussion coming up - they can work out how to deal with this!

We don't have a wiki yet. Why? Because I haven't gotten my head around wikis yet. I do not add services without a clear vision, and so far, I have not got a vision for our wiki - but I live in hope.
LATEST NEWS: We have a wiki now. It is at http://highschoolreaders.wetpaint.com/ . It is only a baby, but watch our progress.

We are now adding sound files, but have yet to venture into movies.

UPDATE: Check out the sound file from the students from Danum in Doncaster, who are keen to join with Delany Book Club in the future. Several schools are interested in this, including a middle school in Pennsylvania.

We have a couple of blogs and the library one is keeping track of my travels. Thanks for all the fresh ideas from the conference. Good to meet you all.

In Newcastle Upon Tyne we are investigating how a library service web-site could be developed along Web2.0 themes - inviting networking (around reading, local issues, community information etc.), user-generated content (book reviews, going-out reviews, social calendars etc.), interactive links between what's going on around the internet and library services.

The vision has two key-elements:

1)that the home page could be tailored and personalised dependent on the customer login, remembering previous searches, providing recommendations, linking to items that other customers have created. It could perhaps also be used as a virtual learning environment where work or items of interest could be saved. The tailored site would be available internally, from the People's Network PCs in Newcastle, and externally, from home and remote internet access.

2)the site would have different signposts and content dependent on the age of the person logging in; e.g. a personal space for 5-10 year olds (with appropriate educational resources, book links, games etc), an 11-15 and 17-18 space(perhaps with more information for vocational qualifications, A-levels, music downloads, subjects of interest), and an 18+ space. So the page would develop and change as the person using it developed.

So that's the vision - without any real investigation into feasibility or cost at this stage. I just wondered what anyone else from public libraries, and other library and business sectors:

think of the idea in principle
think about how the content should be shaped
know of any similar initiatives in libraries
spot any major pitfalls

using wikis with students

I have created a wiki at wikispaces for my Year 10 Geography class to assist them with their revision for the examinations. A number have signed up butonly two have contributed. Males are quick to take up but the girls are a bit frightened. It will be interesting to see how it goes.

Hello! This is my first go on Wetpaint so anything could happen!
Really enjoyed the conference, it's so useful to hear about what other authorities are doing, and the successes and problems they have encountered.
Just to keep you up to speed with what Newcastle Libraries are doing:

Newcastle City Library Service Myspace - this has been up and running for around six weeks or so, and still needs a bit of "tarting up" shall we say. We're hopeful that when we put events and more pics and videos up that we'll attract the sort of igeneration users featured at the conference.

As I am writing this our council website is down, so I can't show the link to a blog we have running from the libraries pages. Will try again soon...

...Second try. I'm at work on a Sunday (enough said) so what better time to add the link to the Newcastle Libraries Download Blog. This came about after we set up a "download pilot" in three of our bigger libraries, enabling customers to access itunes, e-music, Tesco download and other (legal) download sites from these venues. We set up the blog in order to ask users what they thought of the service, and whether they would like to suggest other sites we could add to the pilot.

I must admit, there hasn't been much response as yet to the blog, but it's just been added to the libraries homepage, so we're hoping that might spark some interest!

Back again (about a fortnight later) - I should also have mentioned that we've been allowed to link to Myspace from the council website (I think I remember people from other authorities saying they'd had problems getting permission for this) and we've got a webcam of our City Library being knocked down and now rebuilt City Library Webcam . You can also watch a time-lapse video of the demolition of the library, painstakingly put together by our E-libraries Support Officer David Jobe. I hope this doesn't sound like trumpet blowing too much, but we've also made a podcast of Newcastle's Head of Libraries and President of SCL Tony Durcan in conversation with Richard Wallis from Talis available from the libraries site.

We're looking at using Vanilla or possibly wetpaint to create a forum for local history folk to share ideas and tips online, but we need to put a business case in place to do this first...

We're The Young Generation, And We've Got Something To Say

Web 2.0 is changing things! In this talk Brian described how he sees students'/teenagers' use of technology changing and the implications this has for libraries.

Brian provided a brief overview of Web 2.0, and then explained the
popularity of one particular aspect of Web 2.0 - social networks - by
exploring one well-known social networking service: Facebook.

The talk described how Facebook is being used by students and
schoolchildren, by looking at some case studies, and then sought to respond to the question which many institutions are beginning to ask: "how should we respond to the opportunities and challenges posed by Facebook?"

Using Web2.0 to engage with young people in libraries
From 2004 University of Teesside L&IS began increasingly to use Web 2.0 in its Aimhigher and MLA North East funded enterprise skills work with young people and groups in the Redcar & Cleveland area of the Tees Valley. L&IS has started to buddy other libraries etc using collaborative tools such as Skype and Google Docs. The new ideas, the software and the brand names can change very often. Fashions amongst users (especially young people) can change rapidly also. For all these reasons L&IS has coordinated the idea of Web 2.tees as a structure to allow an alliance of libraries, schools and community organisations to develop their use of the various technologies in a collective ‘community of development’ way that allows mutual support, capturing of good ideas / materials / instructions and organisational / evaluation underpinning from L&IS. There is an emphasis on practical activities such as a Web Messenger Comparison Olympics or rewarding young people for telling us about cool technologies. Getting social and interactive – a new website for young people
Launching in March 2008, The Reading Agency's new website for young people will be the place where young people aged 13+ will be able to share their reading and writing passions. Young people across the UK are being consulted about the site's content, which will allow them to get involved with reading in all its forms - from manga to non-fiction, audio to poetry, books to computer games, plays to lyrics. I was galvanized into finding out more about how to use Web 2.0 after hearing Phil Bradley at SLA last summer. There are several of the developments that we can't use in schools due to the banning of certain kinds of sites (blogging, social network sites like Facebook and My Space, podcasts) but having said that there is still quite a bit of scope for what we can do. This year I am planning to introduce students to igoogle, RSS feeds, social bookmarking, creating their own search engines, wikis, and podcasting.

Last week I started a wiki for the Critical Thinking class and it is fantastic! It made the lesson's homework so much more dynamic. As students submitted their work, I was able to comment directly which then all the students could read. Their work in turn began to comment on the contributions of others...all much more in depth and thoughtful than either a classroom discussion or an individually written answer could have been. I am paying for a commercial wiki which gives me administrator rites and controls which make managing the wiki safe and very easy. The students' response has been great. I assigned the homework on the Thursday to 20 students and by Saturday 10 had already joined in and by Monday I had 15 replies.
